I was raised extremely religious, in one of the stricter sects. One constant source of cognitive dissonance growing up was the emphasis on "god's love", while celebrating biblical acts of genocide, shunning and, ultimately, divine intervention that would wipe out most of humankind.
It begs the question whether the Abrahamic god is a kind father-figure, or a pain elemental, feeding off the suffering of his followers.
